Family Flicks: Turning Red
Co-presented by the UCLA Film & Television Archive
Recommended for ages 10+
During the early aughts in Toronto, ambitious 13 year-old boy band fanatic Mei Lee is torn between remaining her mother's dutiful daughter and the chaos of teenage adolescence. When Mei discovers she transforms into a giant red panda when she gets too excited – which is, to her dismay, all of the time – she must reckon between her two selves: spirited teenager and obedient daughter. With vibrant animation and playful nods to the stylings of anime and manga, Turning Red captures the energy, uncertainty, and excitement of growing up.
(2022, Dir. Domee Shi, DCP, color, 100 min.)
