Family Flicks: The Secret World of Arrietty
Co-presented by the UCLA Film & Television Archive
Studio Ghibli’s enchanting adaptation of Mary Norton’s classic children’s novel The Borrowers follows Arrietty, a tiny “Borrower,” who lives in secret with her family under the floorboards of a rustic human cottage. When she’s discovered by Shawn, an ailing young boy who’s come to spend the summer with his great-aunt, her whole world feels threatened. Showcasing Ghibli’s signature lush and cozy animation, The Secret World of Arrietty (2019) is a gentle, awe-inspiring story about bravery, trust and a beautiful friendship that bridges two very different worlds.
Director: Hiromasa Yonebayashi. Screenwriter: Hayao Miyazaki, Keiko Niwa. With: Bridgit Mendler, David Henrie, Amy Poehler.
