[Translation] "The space of this exhibition is in your mind. Make your life your art."

Gloria Gómez-Sánchez was part of the avant-garde group Arte Nuevo (1966–68). Her early works used domestic furniture to signal the extent to which the private realm operates as a space of control and exploitation. In the late 1960s she stopped making works with a pop aesthetic, instead producing satirical political collages and conceptual interventions. In October 1970 she unleashed a polemic on the "end of art." Gómez-Sánchez presented the empty rooms of the Galería Cultura y Libertad and displayed a sign that said, "The space of this exhibition is in your mind. Make your life your art." The show was accompanied by a manifesto in which she announced that she was replacing the "aesthetic" with the "ethical": "Is art over? Or is it, rather, that the artist has finally come to identify with . . . and to experience the things in this world directly, without leaving a trace, without leaving a work, which comes apart in the effort to keep pace with the times?" Gómez-Sánchez's act combined the dematerialization of the art object—which took hold globally in the late 1960s—with her decision to concentrate her creative energies on her own vital experience.

Ella utilizaba muebles para el hogar con el fin de señalar hasta qué punto los espacios privados funcionan como espacios de control y explotación. Pero hacia fines de los años sesenta deja de hacer obras en estética pop para pasar a hacer collages políticos paródicos e intervenciones conceptuales. En octubre de 1970 desencadena una sonada polémica en torno al "fin del arte". Gómez-Sánchez presenta las salas vacías de la Galería Cultura y Libertad con un cartel que dice "El espacio de esta exposición es el de tu mente. Haz de tu vida la obra", acompañado de un manifiesto en donde hacía pública su decisión de cambiar la 'estética' por la 'ética'. "¿Se acabó el arte? ¿O es que el artista al fin se identifica (…) y vive las cosas de su mundo directamente, sin dejar huella, sin dejar obra, la cual a fuerza de ponerse a tono con su tiempo se desintegra?", señalaba la artista en el manifiesto. El gesto de Gómez-Sánchez combina los procesos de desmaterialización del objeto artístico—que surgen globalmente a fines de los sesenta—con su determinación personal de concentrar sus energías creativas en su propia experiencia vital.
