Limitations beyond my control , 1975

Born in 1951 in East Los Angeles—where she grew up immersed in a Hispanic urban culture attuned to fashion, music, and film—Patssi Valdez began her artistic career while still in high school. As a young woman the artist was troubled by outmoded, stereotypical portrayals of Chicana culture and set out to create characters in front of the camera to present different, more sophisticated and contemporary images of her culture and of herself as a Chicana woman. In Limitations beyond my control, her gaze is confrontational, as if saying, "I dare you to question me," and her image breaks with stereotypical misrepresentations of Mexican American women. She instead presents herself as glamorous, independent, and seeking to be in control. Nevertheless her interaction with the man in this photograph also reflects the experiences of women in urban environments, who were subject to constant harassment, whether by men who regarded them as sex objects or by police conducting illegal search-and-seizure campaigns. With Valdez's new woman came new issues.

Pattsi Valdez nació en East Los Ángeles, donde creció inmersa en la cultura urbana hispánica, al día con la moda, la música y el cine. Valdez comenzó su carrera como artista mientras estaba todavía en secundaria. Como mujer joven, le molestaba la representación estereotípica y pasada de moda de la cultura chicana, y se propuso crear personajes frente a la cámara que presentaran una imagen diferente, más sofisticada  y contemporánea de su cultura y de sí misma como mujer chicana. En Limitations beyond my control (Limitaciones fuera de mi control) su mirada es contenciosa, como si dijera 'atrévete a cuestionarme', y su imagen rompe con la falsa representación estereotípica de la mujer méxico-americana. Sin embargo su interacción con el hombre que aparece en esta fotografía también refleja las experiencias de mujeres en ambientes urbanos que viven constantemente acosadas, tanto por hombres que las consideraban objetos sexuales como por los policías que llevaban a cabo sus campañas de allanamiento ilegal. Esta nueva mujer creada por Valdez viene acompañada de nuevos problemas.
