Informed by, among other things, a feminist stance, Sophie Rivera's work explores the body, intimacy, and the erotic. Her Bowl Study and Rouge et Noir series, produced in the early and mid-1980s, contain abstract images of toilet bowls—in the former, black-and-white images of human excrement and, in the latter, color images of bloody tampons. The works are a form of still life, in which the intimate and the abject become not only public but also beautiful, leading to reflection on the body and its functions beyond taboos and conventions.

Entre otras cosas, la obra de Sophie Rivera es informada por una posición feminista y en este sentido, desarrolló obras que tratan el tema del cuerpo, la intimidad y lo erótico. Las serie Bowl Study y Rouge et Noir fueron realizadas a comienzos y mediados de los años 80 y representan imágenes abstractas de tazas de inodoro, la primera en blanco y negro con heces humanas y la segunda, a color con tampones ensangrentados. Estas obras representan una forma de naturaleza muerta, donde lo íntimo y lo abyecto se hacen no sólo públicos sino que adquieren belleza, promoviendo auto reflexión sobre el cuerpo y sus funciones más allá de tabúes y convenciones.
