Anna Maria Maiolino's series Mapas mentais displays the network that constructs identity, understood as encompassing biological and familial aspects as well as elements of the larger world beyond the family and the self. It refers to knowledge of subjectivity generated in relation to others, to social circumstances, knowledge based on linguistic factors that enable a psychological understanding of the subject. The external world is what, in Lacanian terms, provides the idea of self. For an unconscious that is constantly being produced, language constitutes a worthy parameter of encounter. Maiolino's diagrams show a relational subjectivity that yields a geography, a map of familial and spatial relations. Her work also alludes to the violence that riddled Brazil in those years. In É o que sobra, for example, the artist activated representations tied to violence, threatening to cut out her eyes or her tongue with scissors. In doing so, she replicated in a fictional register the violence that the repressive dictatorship exercised on the social body.
