Cama (Bed) , 1974

For the exhibition Las camas (Beds) in 1974, Feliza Bursztyn made a theatrical installation using beds equipped with engines and bands of steel. The vibrating forms were upholstered with brightly colored fabrics reminiscent of the flags or cloths used to cover images of the Crucifixion during Holy Week. The atmosphere the work created was truly remarkable thanks in part to an electro-acoustic composition written especially for it by the avant-garde composer Jacqueline Nova. The suggestive movements of the beds alluded to the sexual and the forbidden, suggesting intertwined couples in motion. Las camas presented a tragicomic portrait of Colombia, and the works caused an uproar when they were first exhibited.

En 1974, en su exhibición Las camas Feliza Bursztyn hizo una instalación teatral: puso en escena camas con motores y tiras de acero. Las formas vibraban y estaban cubiertas por telas de colores que podrían remitir a la bandera o a los mantos que cubren al Cristo caído en Semana Santa. El ambiente creado era extraordinario y estaba acompañado por una composición electroacústica especialmente realizada por la compositora vanguardista Jacqueline Nova. Los movimientos sugestivos de las camas remitían a parejas entrelazadas y aludían tanto a lo sexual como a lo prohibido. Las camas, que presentaban una imagen tragicómica de Colombia, causaron escándalo cuando se inauguró la exposición.
