Betye Saar, Artist
Prelude to Autumn
, 1962
Prelude to Autumn presents a montage of organic shapes that reference trees, leaves, and plant life. Curvilinear shapes are concentrated at the bottom of the print, crawl the length of the paper, and disperse at the top. The etching is from an early body of work in which Saar experimented with texture, layers, and color, all important elements of her later assemblage and sculptural works.
