Ai Weiwei’s Bicycle

While walking from an artist’s studio to Telescope, my exhibition space in Beijing, recently, I passed by Ai Weiwei’s studio. As I crossed his doorway he came out and almost ran into me. Parked on the sidewalk by his blue door was a bicycle with a basket on the front loaded with fresh cut colorful flowers. In the middle of January in Beijing those flowers looked so gorgeous. It was Weiwei’s bicycle.

We stood over the basket as he freshened up the arrangement and chatted a bit. He said how the flowers were disappearing too fast and that he had hoped that they would last longer. I told him that when I was very young, living in Pacific Palisades, a woman on my street always kept a basket hanging next to her front door. She kept it full of candy for the neighborhood children. We would run to her

Hammer Museum Will Present Three Awards During Made in L.A. 2014

The Hammer Museum is pleased to announce that three awards will be presented in conjunction with Made in L.A. 2014, the Hammer’s biennial exhibition series highlighting emerging and under-recognized artists from the Los Angeles region. The exhibition will be on view at the Hammer Museum June 15 – September 7, 2014. Expanding on the format of the 2012 biennial, the three awards are The Mohn Award, the Career Achievement Award—both of which will be selected by a professional jury—and the Public Recognition Award, which will be determined through a public vote. All three awards are funded through the generosity of Los Angeles philanthropists and art collectors Jarl and Pamela Mohn and the Mohn Family Foundation. All of the artists in the exhibition are eligible to receive the awards. The list of artists participating in Made in L.A. 2014 will be announced in late February.

Open Projector Night: The Winners

Equal parts showcase and showdown, the Hammer’s Open Projector Night is the most raucous independent short film festival around. Films and videos of all genres have garnered praise and wrath alike—filmmakers are encouraged to bring a thick skin! Nationally known and loved comedy team the Sklar Brothers emcee. Our last Open Projector Night was on January 14, and it was a full house! There were many incredible submissions, but we could only pick 3 winners:

The first prize went out to UCLA TFT student Mark Columbus for The Battle of the Jazz Guitarist, an autobiographical short film about the complicated relationship between father and son.

Our second winner was Jeremy David White’s film The First Hope, a short story about first loves, first impressions. After seeing Leia kiss Luke on his VHS copy of Empire Strikes Back, a young boy develops an inappropriate crush of his own. The First Hope is an

The Secret of Yantai

I am often asked the question, “Why did you move to China?” There are several reasons that in 2008 I moved to Beijing; from the emerging Chinese art world and its potential to influence world culture to a deep fascination and love for China, to a desire to test my professional life in a new and unknown world. Starting over at the bottom of the ‘ladder’ is an eye opening, risky, and personally creative venture, and is reason enough for change. But probably the deepest-rooted influence is that my mother was born in China. Her parents were medical missionaries and worked in and founded hospitals in China (and Korea). I grew up with a love for the country. Sarah, my mother, was born in, at that time it was called, Hwanghsien, about 70 miles from Yantai in Shandong Province. Yantai, or Chefoo, where my mother attended boarding school
