10 Things: Introducing HAMMER10

– By Andrea Lennox, Visitor Experience Coordinator

This post is part of 10 Things, a blog series inspired by the Hammer’s free membership program HAMMER10. Throughout the series, we’ll share top 10 lists, highlight HAMMER10 members, give you tips and tricks to make the most of your visit, and more.

After dropping admission fees in 2014, the Hammer launched an earned membership program to give visitors a more participatory (rather than monetary) way to become a member. After two years of research and assessment, we restructured our intent and goals and launched HAMMER10 in the spring of 2016.

HAMMER10 exists for the Hammer enthusiast. Unlike traditional membership programs, HAMMER10 rewards individuals for frequent visitation. During a visit to the museum, visitors can sign up to receive a blue key-tag that tracks each visit to the Hammer. Thereafter, participants receive invitations to events, guided tours, surprise perks, and exclusive information about upcoming programs and exhibitions. Once a participant reaches 10 visits, they are gifted a free, yearlong Participate-level membership (that is usually $100)!

There are new and exciting things happening at the Hammer every day. Below are ten of our favorite things at the Hammer this summer to check out.

1. Explore works by 26 local artists

Come experience our exhibitions of emerging and under-recognized artists that redefine and challenge the art canon.

2. Create designs with artist Silke Otto-Knapp

Experiment with painting washes and create a landscape connected by a single horizon line with Made in L.A. 2016 artist Silke Otto-Knapp on Sunday, July 17.

3. Learn about television production

Attend "An Evening with Ryan Murphy" on Monday, August 1 to hear the Emmy Award-winning writer, director, and producer who has been taking prime-time television by storm with his genre-bending projects since 1999. He is the cocreator of Popular, Glee, The New Normal, American Horror Story, and Scream Queens; the creator of Nip/Tuck; and the producer and director of American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson.

4. Order the shrimp tacos at AMMO

Visit AMMO at the Hammer for lunch after roaming the galleries, or grab a bite and drink before a public program. The menu is seasonal and changes on a weekly basis, inspired by produce from the local farmers market.

5. Buy an artist designed beach towel

Browse the curated selection of books and products that celebrate the value of fine artistry, excellent design, and exceptional craftsmanship of our everyday lives in the Hammer Store

6. Study using our free Wi-Fi

Connect with friends, family members, or coworkers within the Hammer space—or perhaps meet someone new! There is so much to discover and discuss within the museum.

7. Spin!

Come enjoy the lovely summer weather and take a spin on one of our Thomas Heatherwick-designed spun chairs in the courtyard.

8. Vote for your favorite Made in L.A. artist

Visitors to Made in L.A. 2016 choose the recipient of the $25,000 Public Recognition Award by voting for their favorite artist in the exhibition. Support local artists, and cast your vote during your next visit!

9. Party in the courtyard

Enjoy free live concerts by Los Angeles musicians and KCRW DJs in the museum’s courtyard Thursdays this July.

10. Meditate on your lunch break
Swing by for this weekly drop-in session, open to all who are interested in learning how to live more presently in life.
