Family Flicks Film Series: Akeelah and the Bee
Recommended for ages 8+*
Eleven-year-old Akeelah Anderson participates in her school spelling bee to avoid detention—and much to her surprise, she wins! Despite her mother’s objections and the challenges of her home and school life, the determined Akeelah, with help from her friends and her mentor Dr. Larabee, spells her way to the Scripps National Spelling Bee. What Akeelah discovers on her journey is that while winning feels good, having faith in yourself feels even better. (2006, dir. Doug Atchison, 112 min.)
*All ages are welcome. Feel free to take a break with infants and toddlers in the theater lobby.
