Women Faculty, Craft, and the Postwar Divide

At the moment of UCLA’s founding in 1919, its art faculty—teaching a craft-based curriculum—was made up almost entirely of women. It was only in the 1950s, when the applied arts were supplanted by the “fine arts,” that the majority of faculty appointments became men.
