A Nice Place (2009)
For a decade, sociologist-turned-filmmaker Cho Uhn follows four generations of a family repeatedly displaced from Seoul’s hillside slum (Daldongne). Through grandma (halmeoni in Korean) Jung, the family’s emotional anchor, the film traces their struggle for stability amid demolition and redevelopment. Both ethnographic and experimental, this documentary exposes how urban poverty persists across generations in a rapidly modernizing Korea. A Nice Place premiered at the 2009 Seoul International Women’s Film Festival.

Parasite (2019)
Bong Joon-ho’s masterpiece peels back layers of class, envy and survival with surgical precision. Following the resourceful working-class Kim family as they infiltrate a wealthy household, this Academy Award–winning film morphs seamlessly from social satire to psychological thriller to tragedy. Through breathtaking use of vertical space — from the custom-built sets of a decrepit basement apartment to the lofty heights of a hilltop mansion — Bong crafts a searing portrait of inequality, where aspiration inevitably curdles into horror and the dream of upward mobility becomes a slippery slope of epic proportions.

ATTENDING THIS PROGRAM?
Ticketing: Admission to Archive screenings at the Hammer is free. Your seat will be assigned to you when you pick up your ticket at the box office. Seats are assigned on a first come, first served basis, limit one per visitor. Box office opens one hour before the event. Parking: Self-parking is available under the museum. Rates are $8 for the first three hours with museum validation, and $3 for each additional 20 minutes, with a $22 daily maximum. There is an $8 flat rate after 5 p.m. on weekdays, and all day on weekends.
