Introducing Dorothy Dandridge (1999)
Produced and starring Halle Berry, directed by Martha Coolidge and written by Shonda Rhimes, this exciting HBO biopic about Dandridge reintroduced Dandridge to audiences at the turn of the century, cementing her legendary status. Based on an unauthorized biography by Earl Mills, Dandridge’s former manager, the story centers on Dandridge in the 1960s reminiscing on the phone about her career peaks and valleys. When Berry became the first (and still only) Black woman to win the Best Actress Oscar a few years later for Monster’s Ball in 2002, she said in her acceptance speech, “This is for Dorothy Dandridge.”
DCP. Director: Martha Coolidge. Screenwriters: Shonda Rhimes, Scott Abbott. With: Halle Berry, Brent Spiner.
The UCLA Film & Television Archive is a division of UCLA Library, and presents its public programs in the Billy Wilder Theater at the Hammer, among other venues. For more information about the Archive, visit cinema.ucla.edu.
