Screenings UCLA Film & TV Archive

Intimacies

This program is presented by the UCLA Film & Television Archive. Part of the UCLA Film & Television Archive screening series Ryusuke Hamaguchi: Early Works. Learn more at cinema.ucla.edu.

Born out of a workshop with acting students from the Tokyo film school ENBU, Intimacies (2012) itself follows a group of students rehearsing and then staging a play. At four hours, it’s Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s earliest exploration of duration as a cinematic device with the first half focused on the group’s preparations and the second, aside from a brief, poignant coda, a presentation of the complete play. Personal problems and current events threaten to derail the project with director Reiko (Rei Hirano) adjusting and revising to keep the play and her relationship with the playwright, Ryo (Ryo Sato), on track.

Director/Screenwriter: Ryusuke Hamaguchi. With: Rei Hirano, Ryo Sato, Mikio Tayama.

The UCLA Film & Television Archive is a division of UCLA Library, and presents its public programs in the Billy Wilder Theater at the Hammer, among other venues. For more information about the Archive, visit cinema.ucla.edu.
