JazzPOP: Roberto Miranda Quartet

  • This is a past program

An esteemed sideman with Los Angeles jazz heroes Bobby Bradford, Horace Tapscott, John Carter, and Kenny Burrell, bassist Roberto Miranda is known for his propulsive sense of swing, gorgeous tone, and generosity as an improviser and accompanist. In this rare outing as bandleader, Miranda features his own music for quartet—snakey bebop melodies and blues riffs nested in a weightlessly grooving rhythm section.

JazzPOP

JazzPOP, the Hammer’s “reliably excellent” (Los Angeles Times) creative jazz festival, celebrates its 12th season this summer, with three concerts featuring Southern California bass players who lead their bands from the bottom up. Expect deep grooves, free jazz explosions, and music drawing from influences as diverse as vintage L.A. punk, acoustic blues, bebop, and Puerto Rican folk music. Curated by San Francisco Bay Area bassist Lisa Mezzacappa.

All Hammer public programs are free and made possible by a major gift from an anonymous donor.

Generous support is also provided by Susan Bay Nimoy and Leonard Nimoy, Good Works Foundation and Laura Donnelley, an anonymous donor, The Samuel Goldwyn Foundation, and all Hammer members.

The Hammer’s digital presentation of its public programs is made possible by the Billy and Audrey L. Wilder Foundation.
