Houseguest: Gabbiani Opens at the Hammer Museum

SERIES INVITES ARTISTS TO CURATE FROM THE COLLECTIONS

Los Angeles, CA – The Hammer Museum presents the second exhibition of Houseguest, a new series in
which artists are invited to curate a show from among the Museum’s diverse collections. For this
exhibition, Los Angeles-based artist Francesca Gabbiani explores the subjects of witchcraft and
sorcery, themes that are often subtly evoked in her own work. She browsed through the collections of
the Grunwald Center for the Graphic Arts at the Hammer Museum, and UCLA’s Departments of Special
Collections at both the Charles E. Young Research Library and the Louise M. Darling Biomedical Library.
Gabbiani pursued her research with an eye for mysterious and macabre images, illustrations of
poisonous and deadly plants, as well as representations of unearthly figures like fairies and elves. The

Shanghaied in Hangzhou

A short train ride southwest of Shanghai is the Westlake region of Zhejiang Province, one of the most beautifully serene areas in all of China. It also has one of the most important art schools in the country, the China Academy of Art, with many artists working there.

Nanjing & Shanghai

In early September Shanghai hosted two art fairs and a biennial concurrently. This was a part of a larger Asian collaboration of fairs and exhibitions: Art Beijing and Showcase Singapore art fairs, Guangzhou, Nanjing, and Yokohama Triennials, and Singapore, Gwangju, and Taipei Biennials. It looks as though the Grand Tour has relocated to the east.

ORANGES AND SARDINES: CONVERSATIONS ON ABSTRACT PAINTING OPENS AT THE HAMMER MUSEUM

Los Angeles, CA - Oranges and Sardines examines art through the eyes and minds of artists and is a testament to the persistence of the visual art object, particularly abstract painting. In this exhibition six contemporary abstract painters— Mark Grotjahn, Wade Guyton, Mary Heilmann, Amy Sillman, Charline von Heyl, and Christopher Wool— were asked to select one or two of their recent paintings to be shown alongside works by other artists who have had a significant impact on their thinking and the development of their practice.
