Inside the World of Paul McCarthy

– By Laura Sils

Last month, Hammer Director Annie Philbin, curators Anne Ellegood and Aram Moshayedi, and the Hammer Patrons gathered for a studio visit with L.A. artist Paul McCarthy. Paul is a featured artist in the Museum’s current exhibition Take It or Leave It: Institution, Image, Ideology on view through this Sunday, May 18. We started the morning far afield, but well worth the drive, in Baldwin Park where Paul creates his massive sculptural work. We saw McCarthy’s modern interpretations of characters drawn from Disney’s beloved animated classic film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Paul took us on a wonderful and informative tour, telling us about his techniques and processes, and taking the time to answer questions and engage with the group.

At his second studio, we were treated to a personalized tour of Paul’s vast and immersive White SnowAs the group moved through the space we encountered a yellow ranch-style house, a replica of the Paul’s childhood home in Salt Lake City. The morning concluded with some snacks and time to meet one another and talk with Paul and his wife Karen.
