Who: Priority will be given to 4th-6th grade generalist teachers at Title I schools

When: July 8–10, 2019, 8:30 a.m.–3 p.m.

Where: The Hammer Museum and the Broad Art Center at UCLA

Cost: FREE tuition. In addition:

  • Participating teachers from Title I schools located within a 15-mile radius of the Hammer Museum are eligible to receive subsidized bus transportation for one field trip to the museum or Franklin D. Murphy Sculpture Garden during the 2019-20 school year.
  • LAUSD teachers will be eligible for 1 LAUSD salary point. In order to meet LAUSD’s salary point requirements, there are additional required assignments outside of attending the teacher institute, including developing an arts-integrated unit and creating a lesson for before, during, and after a field trip to the Hammer Museum.

This teacher institute is organized by the Hammer Museum and the Visual and Performing Arts Education Program (VAPAE) in the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture.

Participants in this workshop will:

  • Learn how to enhance students’ critical thinking, communication, and evidence-based reasoning skills through inquiry-based discussions about works of art.
  • Explore strategies for identifying and applying personal, curricular, and sociopolitical themes and concepts in a variety of artworks and art forms.
  • Develop lesson ideas that integrate the arts and humanities and align with select English Language Arts Common Core standards and 21st century skills.
  • Actively engage in collaborative creative art-making processes.
  • Enhance confidence in leading students on a trip to an art museum with a subsidized bus
