Jeremy Shaw (b. Vancouver, 1977) lives and works in Vancouver and Berlin. Shaw has had solo presentations of his work at Kunstverein Hamburg, Hamburg (2018); Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver (2015); Schinkel Pavillon, Berlin (2013); MoMA PS1, Long Island City, New York (2011); and Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art, Toronto (2006), among others. He participated in various international surveys, including the 57th Venice Biennale (2017); Manifesta 11, Zurich (2016); and 12th Biennale de Lyon, France (2013). Other group exhibitions of note featuring Shaw include Haus de Kunst, Munich (2018); Kunsthalle Wien (2017); National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa (2016); Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art, Rotterdam (2016, 2011); Modern Art Museum of Tokyo (2015); Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam (2013); Kunst-Werke Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin (2012); and Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2012), among others. Shaw was awarded the 2016 Sobey Art Award. For his residency at the Hammer, Shaw conducted research for upcoming film and studio-based projects that engage particular features of California history, sociology, and geography, including skateboarding culture and architecture, and West Coast spiritual cults of the late twentieth century.
