Drum is influenced by Conwill's interest in what he calls juju, which is a combination of African spirituality and the artist's personal mythology. Conwill was formally trained at Howard University, attended graduate school at the University of Southern California, and joined the Los Angeles Street Graphics Committee after graduation to paint socially conscious murals in the city. The artist was also a frequent collaborator with Senga Nengudi, Maren Hassinger, David Hammons, and Franklin Parker.
