On Digitally Archiving an Exhibition
Earlier this month, the Hammer launched a digital archive of the 2014 exhibition Take It or Leave It: Institution, Image, Ideology, part of a series of digital initiatives funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
What you would miss at the Hammer without the NEA and NEH
Support from the NEA for the Hammer’s exhibitions is much more valuable than simply providing funding that helps make these shows possible. It also carries great symbolic value, calling attention to important work by artists that should be experienced by American audiences. –Anne Ellegood, senior curator
A Day in the Life of a VER: Elizabeth Zamets
Our team of 100 Visitor Experience Representatives come from local colleges and universities, encompassing a diverse range of backgrounds and fields of study. VERs, as we call them, are students at UCLA, UCLA Extension, and Santa Monica College. They make up the largest portion of the Hammer’s part-time employment, and the Hammer is the only institution at UCLA that hires international students.
Remembering Trisha Brown
Trisha Brown passed away on Saturday, March 18 at the age of 80 in San Antonio, Texas. Brown’s choreography, described as a combination of “the cerebral and sensuous sides of dance,” incorporated quotidian activities such as walking, jumping, and running with more complicated movements, resulting in pieces that felt both casual and spontaneous but also highly composed.
As the Hammer's social media manager, I have the pleasure of scrolling through hundreds of visitor photos each week. I love seeing what artworks and spaces people are most drawn to. But the photos that tend to stand out to me the most are those that capture the lesser-explored areas of the museum.
Where are They Now? Analia Saban's Fitted Bed Sheet
"Fitted Bed Sheet" was first shown in "Made in L.A. 2012" and is currently on view at the Blaffer Art Museum in Houston where viewers can see the evolution of Saban’s investigations in painting, printmaking, photography, and sculpture over the last decade.
