    SICHUAN Part 1: Chengdu

When I first moved to Beijing in April of 2008, one of first trips I made inside China was to Sichuan, one of the most beautiful and varied provinces in China and the world. I first went to Chongqing to visit the Sichuan Academy of Fine Art and then to Chengdu where I met with Chen Qiulin (2009 Hammer Project artist) and gallerist Liu Jie of 1000 Plateaus Gallery. On May 12 we were in the gallery with artist Deng Tai (2012 Telescope Beijing artist) talking to Liu Jie about the artist community of Chengdu when the walls and floors started shaking and popping. An 8.0 level earthquake struck in the afternoon just 6 km from Chengdu in the small town of Wenchuan. We ran out of the gallery and out into the streets as people were screaming and the granite tiles of the building fell and crashed

The Mannlicher Carcano Radio Hour, now in its 15th year of improvised live multi-city audio collage based experimental radio broadcasts, have been “randomly” scheduled to participate in the KCHUNG Radio residency at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles on the very day in between the 50th anniversary of the assassination of JFK and the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Lee Harvey Oswald. Mannlicher Carcano – whose name derives from the rifle allegedly used by LHO to shoot JFK - is an improvisational audio collage group that coalesced in the late-1980’s out of a number of new music, sound art, and post-punk experiments, and has been performing and recording regularly for

    JET LAG and TOFU

The early morning ‘mist’ hangs over Beijing, and I am often awake to see it unfold. I travel so often that my body clock is permanently haywire. After I arrive Beijing from traveling abroad I wake up before the sun and am ready for lunch at 6:00am. I don’t fight it, in fact I love to go to sleep whenever I get tired and wake up whenever I wake up, and that is very early. One perk in having this condition is being able to take a short walk to a local restaurant on the edge of 798 art district in the early morning and eat breakfast with the students, construction workers, and businessmen as they go to school and to work. There are no art world people here at this time of the morning. Outside, clouds of steam pour out of bamboo baskets and stainless drums, oil boils

  • the ANONYMOUS STUDIO

    the ANONYMOUS STUDIO

I have a wandering ‘eye’ that constantly surveys a local terrain in search of something beautiful or strange, something previously hidden. I am an artist and a collector of after-images and oddities of life. The artists’ studio gives me, as the Chinese say, Double Happiness. It is not just a ‘warehouse’ of finished art but also an archeological site where I can unearth and frame my own images from their leftovers. I can show them a part of themselves they perhaps have not seen before. As a curator I not only look for finished artworks to exhibit but also for the processes, accidents, refuse, and raw materials of art and life. The studio is like a drawing. It is a work in flux, one that is created by an artist without thinking about a grand finished object. It is the thing artists do when they don’t ‘think.’ These

  • ASMR at the Hammer Museum: Epilogue

ASMR at the Hammer Museum: Epilogue

"I am sorry that I missed your Hammer performance, but to be real honest, ASMR makes me so nervous I wanna run screaming into a river." This was a text I received from a dear friend named Erica in the immediate wake of my ASMR-focused Whisper Report in the Hammer's main gallery last month. I laughed appreciatively, as I had been anticipating a lot of negative feedback. The phenomenon of ASMR is often difficult to explain to those who don't feel it; the tingles are understood easily enough, but the meditative relaxation of it is something that I feel unnerves those who aren't blessed with the 'condition'. Heading into the project, I had braced for the absolute worst, as many people close to me have expressed the same discomfort with ASMR as Erica. What caught me by surprise, however, was the overwhelmingly positive response I received from those
