GALA IN THE GARDEN
The annual Hammer Museum Gala in the Garden has, after eight successful years, become a highly anticipated event on Los Angeles' fall social calendar. The Gala is our major fundraising event of the year and, with the help of our generous supporters, it raises significant funds for the Museum’s award-winning exhibitions and public programs.
This year’s Gala is set for September 24, 2011. The evening includes a viewing of current exhibitions and cocktails followed by a seated dinner in the outdoor courtyard. This year we will honor two tremendous talents and good friends of the Museum: artist and UCLA faculty member, Lari Pittman, and cartoonist, writer, and creator of The Simpsons, Matt Groening. Art critic Christopher Knight will pay tribute to Lari and actor Neil Patrick Harris will toast Matt. Chef Suzanne Goin of Lucques will once again prepare a fabulous menu, there will be a special performance by the amazing Bruno Mars, and artist Jorge Pardo will design a courtyard lighting installation. This evening has been made possible with the generous support of CXA+Art, a division of Creative Exchange Agency.
In October 2010, we honored artist Charles Ray and author, chef, and food activist Alice Waters. Viveca and Will Ferrell chaired the event where artist Jeff Wall gave the tribute to Charley and actress Jane Fonda toasted Alice.
Previous tribute speakers and co-chairs have included actress Diane Keaton, writer Salman Rushdie, photographer Cindy Sherman, writer/director John Waters, Senator Edward Kennedy, actor/director Ben Stiller, actor Tobey Maguire, filmmaker Sofia Coppola, actress Anjelica Huston, and artist Richard Serra; past honorees include Miuccia Prada, Mike Kelley, John Baldessari, Joan Didion, Ed Ruscha, Dave Eggers, Senator John Tunney, and Frank Gehry.
