The annual Hammer Museum Gala in the Garden has, after six-successful years, become a highly anticipated event on Los Angeles’ fall social calendar. The Gala is our major fundraising event of the year and, with the help of our generous supporters, it raises significant funds for the Museum’s award-winning exhibitions and public programs. Every year the Museum honors individuals who have made significant contributions to the arts.

The Hammer has become a beloved city institution and the evening attracts cultural and civic leaders, as well as many artists, collectors, and patrons of the arts. The Gala includes a viewing of current exhibitions and cocktails followed by a seated dinner in the outdoor courtyard. We enlist chef Suzanne Goin of Lucques, one of the best restaurants in Los Angeles, to create the menu.

On October 5, 2008, the Hammer honored two close friends of the Museum, architect Frank Gehry and photographer Cathy Opie. 2008 Pritzker prize-winning architect Jean Nouvel delivered the tribute to Frank, while actor and director Ben Stiller was on hand to toast Cathy. Jennifer & Tobey Maguire and Lauren & Benedikt Taschen served as the co-chairs for this event. This evening was made possible with the generous support of Gucci.

Past tribute speakers and co-chairs have included photographer Cindy Sherman, writer/director, John Waters, Senator Edward Kennedy, filmmaker Sofia Coppola, philanthropist Eli Broad, actress Anjelica Huston, artist Richard Serra, and critic Dave Hickey; past honorees include Miuccia Prada, Mike Kelley, John Baldessari, Joan Didion, Ed Ruscha, Senator John Tunney, Sidney Felsen and Joni Moisant Weyl. In 2007, guests enjoyed a performance by Antony of Antony and the Johnsons.

Funds raised from the Gala support the Museum’s exhibitions and programs.
