The annual Hammer Museum Gala in the Garden has, after seven successful years, become a highly anticipated event on Los Angeles' fall social calendar. The Gala is our major fundraising event of the year and, with the help of our generous supporters, it raises significant funds for the Museum’s award-winning exhibitions and public programs. Every year the Museum honors individuals who have made significant contributions to the arts.
The Hammer has become a beloved city institution and the evening attracts cultural and civic leaders, as well as many artists, collectors, and patrons of the arts. The Gala includes a viewing of current exhibitions and cocktails followed by a seated dinner in the outdoor courtyard. We enlist chef Suzanne Goin of Lucques, one of the best restaurants in Los Angeles, to create the menu.
On October 10, 2009, the Hammer honored two close friends of the Museum, artist Kara Walker and writer Dave Eggers. Celebrated novelist Salman Rushdie delivered the tribute to Kara, while actor Catherine Keener was on hand to toast Dave. Diane Keaton served as honorary co-chair while Ann Moss, Margie Perenchio, and Carole Bayer Sager served as the co-chairs for this event.
Past tribute speakers and co-chairs have included actor and director Ben Stiller, architect Jean Nouvel, photographer Cindy Sherman, writer/director, John Waters, Senator Edward Kennedy, filmmaker Sofia Coppola, philanthropist Eli Broad, actress Anjelica Huston, artist Richard Serra, and critic Dave Hickey; past honorees include Frank Gehry, Catherine Opie, Miuccia Prada, Mike Kelley, John Baldessari, Joan Didion, Ed Ruscha, Senator John Tunney, Sidney Felsen and Joni Moisant Weyl.
Funds raised from the Gala support the Museum’s exhibitions and programs.
