    The Hammer Museum seeks a Foundations & Government Relations Manager to develop, prepare, and submit grant proposals, funding requests, and reports to foundation and government (and when appropriate, corporate and individual) funding sources.

    Grant research and proposal writing responsibilities include: conducting research to identify funding prospects; implementing fundraising strategies; organizing and maintaining up-to-date guidelines and resource files; and researching, developing, writing, preparing, and submitting all grant proposals and applications for private, corporate, and foundation resources. Additionally, in consultation with the Director of Development, this position must initiate relationships with new funders and cultivate and maintain strong relationships with foundation and government contacts.

    The Foundations & Government Relations Manager will also oversee the acknowledgement process for grants received including: creating a central grants calendar and database; tracking pending requests; maintaining donor profiles and gift information in Hammer database and in Advance. Additionally, this position must manage all grant reporting and accounting, including preparation of reports, invoices, budgets, progress reports, and final reports.
    This position is an essential part of the Development Department reporting to the Associate Director of Development and working closely with the curatorial and development staff to design strategies for new and increased support. Required skills and qualifications: Two to four years of institutional fundraising experience, with an emphasis on grant writing and reporting, donor relations, and proposal development; experience and skill acting as a facilitator, capable of articulating institutional objectives to funders; ability to collaborate and work within deadlines; demonstrated excellent oral communication skills to solicit potential donors and to collect and relate information with accuracy and diplomacy; excellent interpersonal skills to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with staff, University administrators, donors and volunteers in a multi-ethnic and diverse working environment. A Bachelors degree is also required, although an advance degree is preferred. The preferred candidate will also have a knowledge of, and experience in arts, cultural, and/or educational organizations; knowledge of the philosophy and principles of a research university; familiarity with funding history and the unique legal position of the Museum; and the ability to analyze and summarize computer-generated reports.

    The Hammer Museum seeks an experienced, dynamic, and visionary leader for the position of Deputy Director of Exhibitions and Programs / Chief Curator. In conjunction with the Museum's director, the Deputy Director/Chief Curator has creative responsibility and administrative authority for the overall curatorial direction of the Museum and for the creation, stewardship, and management of the Museum's exhibitions, contemporary collections, and public programs. The Deputy Director/Chief Curator makes critical, strategic, and innovative decisions regarding the Museum's institutional plans, and has oversight of senior and administrative staff in leading curatorial, collections, and education initiatives in accordance with standard museum practice.

    The Deputy Director/Chief Curator's primary duties are the creative and strategic conceptualization, development, and direction of in-house exhibitions; the evaluation and selection of purchases and gifts of works of art for the Museum’s contemporary collection; the determination of institutional curatorial priorities; the oversight of the organization and implementation of exhibitions; and the selection and leadership of traveling and guest-curated exhibitions. The Deputy Director/Chief Curator also establishes the curatorial direction of, acts as managing editor for, and supervises the production of Museum exhibition catalogues and publications; directs and manages the curatorial, registrarial, and preparation departments; directs and provides leadership to the public programs and academic initiatives; and develops and participates in artist and curatorial lectures and other special education, outreach, and academic community programs, including scholarly meetings, symposia, and conferences, and tours for both specialized and general audiences.

    Required skills and qualifications: Significant and demonstrated curatorial experience at a senior curatorial and museum management level; Ability to integrate the curatorial, collections, and education activities of the Museum with the teaching, research and public service missions of the University; Extensive and thorough knowledge of professional museum standards and practices for all aspects of exhibitions and collections, including display, care, security, management, storage, shipping, insurance, etc; Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with other staff members, subordinates and administrators; Working knowledge of legal and ethical aspects or fine arts collecting, maintaining, borrowing, and exhibiting; Proven experience and ability to manage a multi-million dollar budget; Significant experience managing a department of ten or more.

    Program Assistant, Academic and Residency Programs

    Under the supervision of the Director of Academic and Residency Programs, the Program Assistant will coordinate the Museum's Artist Residency Program, Artist Council, and academic programs. The Artist Residency Program hosts artists in Los Angeles for short and long term residencies designed to support the work of invited artists and to engage them with the resources and communities of the Hammer, UCLA, and Los Angeles. The Artist Council consists of 12 artists who convene at the Museum for two 2-day meetings each year for the purpose of advising the Museum on all aspects of its work, including exhibitions, programs, and collections. Academic programs include but are not limited to public programs organized in conjunction with UCLA departments, the Student Educator program, and a one-credit class taught through the Art department. The Student Educator Program trains six UCLA students who provide tours of the permanent collections, sculpture garden, and temporary exhibitions to museum visitors of all ages.

    Responsibilities include assisting with all aspects of the artist residencies and Artist Council, including providing logistical, administrative, and research support to artists during residencies and to Artist Council members, including travel arrangements, contracts, and record keeping. Other tasks include coordinating all aspects of the Student Educator program including recruitment, training, and scheduling. The Program Assistant will also lead public tours as needed. Major administrative duties include organizing and maintaining education department, artist council, and residency files; scheduling meetings and making travel arrangements for artists and museum consultants; preparing drafts and final correspondence, memoranda, reports, tables, and other documents; and assisting the Director of Academic and Residency Programs with administrative duties.

    Requirements include prior experience working in a cultural organization and a demonstrated ability to work diplomatically with artists; demonstrated office management and administrative assistance experience; excellent oral and written communication skills. Incumbent must also be highly organized, efficient, and attentive to detail, with excellent follow-up skills; self-starting, resourceful, proactive, and motivated in performing and excelling in responsibilities; have the ability to prioritize and adjust heavy workload, manage a variety of tasks, and meet various deadlines with changing priorities, frequent interruptions, and conflicting deadlines; skilled in planning and coordinating meetings and events; and be able to work occasional weekends and evening hours.     Curatorial Assistant

    The Hammer Museum seeks a resourceful and motivated Curatorial Assistant to provide administrative and research support to the Curatorial Department. Major administrative duties include responding to artist submissions and exhibition proposals; organizing and maintaining collections/exhibition files and various departmental filing systems; schedule and travel planning for artists and museum consultants; preparing drafts and final correspondence, memoranda, reports, tables, and other documents; and assisting curatorial staff with administrative duties related to collections management, exhibition organization, and day-to-day museum operations. Major curatorial duties include conducting research on the permanent collection and exhibition proposals, compiling informational packets for traveling exhibitions; preparing, coordinating, and monitoring loan forms and contracts according to internal procedures; and managing appointments and additions to the Hammer Video Library.

    The successful candidate will have a MA in art or art history as well as prior art museum experience and knowledge of museum operations, standards, practices and procedures. Other requirements include demonstrated administrative assistance experience; proven research skills, excellent computer skills and communication skills; and the ability to prioritize a heavy workload and manage a variety of tasks to meet both regular and changing deadlines.     Senior Preparator

    Under the direct supervision of the Exhibition Designer and Chief Preparator, the Senior Preparator will act as the lead art handler for all incoming and outgoing loans of the museum, and will assist the registrar department in all daily art movement of the museum’s collection. This will include the handling, packing and storage of these art works. Additionally, the Senior Preparator will be responsible for the construction, production and purchase of all packing and crating materials for outgoing loans and long term museum storage. The Senior Preparator will also assist the Exhibition Designer and Chief Preparator in the hiring and management of all part-time installation crew members, including creating and organizing the installation crew’s schedule, hiring for the specific installation times, and facilitating some administrative tasks related to the installation crew. The Senior Preparator will actively install and de-install all temporary exhibitions, while assisting the Exhibition Designer and Chief Preparator in overseeing the process and managing the prep crew, including the movement, hanging, and placement of artwork. The Senior Preparator will also be responsible for all gallery lighting and maintenance.

    Required skills and qualifications: Bachelors of Fine Art in studio art or art history and a minimum of three years experience as a preparator in a public gallery or a museum required. Significant knowledge and experience in art handling is mandatory, including moving, storing, packing, installation, proper maintenance, and security of works of art in a variety of mediums. Experience managing labor and overseeing complex projects is also necessary. Additionally, incumbent must have experience and a general knowledge of exhibition lighting, audio visual equipment and installation, power and hand tools, carpentry (from rough to finish), exhibition case and furniture fabrication, electrical requirements, and painting.

    The Curator is responsible for conceptualizing, developing, and organizing exhibitions of contemporary art. The special focus of this position is to oversee the Hammer Projects program and organizes a number of Hammer Projects each year. Hammer Projects are a series of exhibitions that focus primarily on the work of emerging artists, and reflect the Museum’s commitment to contemporary art by providing international and local artists a laboratory-like environment to create new work, or to present existing work in a new context. Additionally, this position is responsible for conceptualizing, editing and overseeing the production of the publications which will accompany these exhibitions. The Curator also oversees traveling exhibitions and coordinates exhibitions with guest curators. The Curator works closely with the Chief Curator, Museum Director, and other senior staff to develop programming for the Museum. This position also represents the Museum to the outside community, in particular with artists, galleries and donors. Additional duties will include administrative responsibilities within the Curatorial Department.

    Required skills and qualifications: Extensive curatorial experience, particularly in organizing exhibitions of contemporary art and knowledge of standard curatorial practice and collections management policies. Thorough knowledge of 20th century art history with emphasis on contemporary art, and of the contemporary art market, galleries, and museums. Research skills to pursue independently exhibitions and publications. Basic knowledge of the printing industry as it relates to the publication of exhibition catalogues. Interpersonal skills to deal effectively with artists, collectors, art dealers, museum personnel, student, faculty, volunteers, and community members on local, national and international levels.     Print Production and Design Assistant

    The Hammer Museum seeks a Print Production and Design Assistant to work with the Senior Designer in the creation and project management of design pieces that clearly communicate, maintain, and enhance the Museum's visual identity, and express the Hammer's position as a dynamic cultural institution. Primary responsibilities include managing the process (bids, scheduling, production and delivery) of all printed collateral for the Hammer Museum, from concept through production, including photography, separations, 4-color press work and digital production.
    Secondary responsibilities include designing flyers, postcards, and posters; permanent and temporary environmental/directional graphics; public program and event signage; stationery and other identity pieces. Many design projects require working within the pre-established house style and project templates.

    Strong project management skills and the proven ability to manage multiple jobs simultaneously, establish timelines and meet deadlines, negotiate with outside vendors, coordinate with multiple departments, and deliver on-time and on-budget results is essential. The ideal candidate will have excellent written and verbal communication skills, including knowledge of Excel, Word and Outlook/Entourage. Technical requirements include the ability to operate a Mac with thorough design knowledge of InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and a basic understanding of Quark Xpress.     Exhibition Carpenter

Candidates must have significant experience in finish carpentry, including cabinetry and furniture construction.     Preparator, Hammer Museum

    The Hammer Museum is seeking temporary preparators to join the preparator team for the installation and de-installation of all Museum exhibitions. Preparators are responsible for the safe handling of a variety of art works in the Museum collection and works on loan. Additionally, preparators prepare the Museum’s galleries prior to each installation, which might include a variety of tasks from painting to carpentry to audio visual set-up. Successful candidates must possess prior museum or fine art gallery preparator experience, basic knowledge of building techniques, and a strong enthusiasm for working as part of a collaborative team.

    Student Educators

    The Hammer Museum is looking for student educators for the 2008-2009 academic year.

    Hammer Museum educators are UCLA students who serve as the museum’s “docents,” leading tours of special exhibitions and the permanent collection for audiences of diverse backgrounds and ages.

    Hammer Student Educators are the bridge between our visitors and our artworks and are therefore key representatives of the Hammer. Members of our educator corps are given in-depth information on the Hammer’s special exhibitions and permanent collections and are responsible for the entire process of creating a tour, from research to execution.

    By serving as educators, students can become actively involved with the Museum and gain valuable experience in museum work, as well as improve their research, writing, and communication skills. Hammer Educators are paid $10 an hour and are expected to work four hours per week at the Hammer researching, planning, and giving tours. Five to six student educators are selected each academic year.
