Gala in the Garden

SOLD-OUT
The Hammer is thrilled to honor artist Kara Walker and Dave Eggers, writer and founder of 826 National, the nonprofit tutoring, writing, and publishing organization, at the 2009 Gala in the Garden. Acclaimed contemporary artist Kara Walker has had more than 40 solo exhibitions, received a MacArthur Genius Award in 1997, and was also the Hammer’s very first Hammer Projects artist. Dave Eggers recently co-wrote the screenplay for Where the Wild Things Are and this November will receive the National Book Foundation’s Literarian Award. Eggers’ most recent work, Zeitoun, is a nonfiction account of a Syrian-American immigrant and his extraordinary experience during Hurricane Katrina. Writer Salman Rushdie will give the tribute to Kara Walker, while actor Catherine Keener will speak about Dave Eggers. An eclectic mix of emerging and established artists, gallerists, patrons, and cultural and entertainment leaders will attend this sophisticated celebration of Los Angeles and its unmatched cultural resources. The evening’s festivities also include an installation in the Museum courtyard by artist Jennifer Steinkamp. Los Angeles chef Suzanne Goin, of the acclaimed restaurants A.O.C. and Lucques, will once again prepare the menu for the occasion, and Mitie Tucker will produce the event. The Gala raises critical funds for Hammer exhibitions and programs, and last year’s sold-out Gala raised over $1.2 million towards this cause.

This sold-out event is co-chaired by Ann Moss, Margie Perenchio, Carole Bayer Sager, along with honorary co-chair Diane Keaton.
