Graphic Design Family Day

With the technological tools of making and distributing at our fingertips, the exhibition Graphic Design: Now in Production makes the point that everyone can be a designer these days. The second annual Family Day at the Hammer encourages all ages to participate in design by creating their own letterforms, screenprinting t-shirts and posters, interacting with new design technologies, viewing ground-breaking commercials screened in the Billy Wilder Theater by the UCLA Film and Television Archive, and more.

You're Just My Type! Experimental Typography + Collaborative Design
With Designer Margo Graxeda
Best for ages 6 and above

Create your own alphabet! Make 3D letterforms out of clay! Collage using found typefaces! Work with Designer Margo Graxeda to create your own typographic masterpiece and contribute to a group design piece, as you begin your love affair with type.

Make Your Mark: Screen-printing Graphic Posters
With Designer Eric Gardner
Best for ages 8 and above

Make your mark by creating a multi-layered poster made through a traditional screen-printing process. Work with Hammer Designer Eric Gardner to learn how to layer screen designs and pull inks on beautiful French press papers for your own customized graphic poster.

Pocket Book: A Zine-making Workshop
With Designers W. Henri Lucas, Brian Roettinger, and Gail Swanlund
All ages

Xerox the stuff from your pockets or purses and help create a limited edition zine! Participants will learn how to produce five zine “issues” over the course of the event with famed designers W. Henri Lucas, Brian Roettinger, and Gail Swanlund.

Dancing Design: LIVE Motion Graphics & Video Mapping
With Dave Harrow (aka VJ Oicho) and Omar Salas
All ages

Learn about how interactive Motion Graphics are created and performed for live events with the Hammer audio-visual staff. Using graphic design elements from the current Hammer exhibition, participants can make color, text and image combinations dance around the screen creating light and motion with live video manipulation.

Trip the Light Fantastic: Commercials and Motion Graphics From Robert Abel & Associates, 1971-1987
Presented by the UCLA Film & Television Archive
All ages

Robert Abel & Associates (RA&A), helped to define the look of an era and to change the future of moving-imagemaking forever. Abel pioneered the application of computer-generated imagery (CGI) in commercials, broadcast television and film. Enjoy a presentation of some of RA&A’s most iconic work in the 70s and 80s, curated by the UCLA Film & Television Archive.

Tot Spot: Design for Little Ones
With Artist Mekenzie Kay Schneider
Ages 0-4

Little ones can experiment with graphic elements like letter stamps, dot markers and paint rollers on their own or on a collaborative mural. Parents and kids can also take a pause and read childrens’ books furnished by the Westwood Library Branch, or play with building blocks.
