Hammer Student Association
Formed in 2009, the Hammer Student Association (H.S.A.) is a UCLA student group that creates dynamic programs and content at the Hammer Museum by and for UCLA students. Working in collaboration with Hammer staff and artists, students conceptualize events and workshops, implement design and marketing strategies, and publish the annual interdisciplinary arts journal GRAPHITE. Through this process, students attend internal meetings and professional luncheons, conduct studio visits with contemporary artists, and gain insight into the inner workings of the art world and the museum profession.
H.S.A. is comprised of three separate but collaborating committees; Events, Communications, and the GRAPHITE editorial staff. Each committee works with a Hammer staff liaison. The group also conducts professional development seminars, studio visits with artists and designers, and attends Hammer openings and special events.
How To Apply
The Hammer Student Association is a serious commitment with incredible rewards for students of all disciplines. Members produce events, a high-quality publication, and innovative marketing and design each year; as well as gain unprecedented access to artists, curators, and art world professionals. In order to do all of this, members of HSA commit to attending a weekly full group meeting on Monday evenings, as well as one additional committee meeting per week. Members also must volunteer to work events and conduct on-campus outreach and promotion. To participate in HSA-only studio visits, artist and curator luncheons, and workshops, members must maintain “good standing” by fulfilling this commitment consistently.
To apply, prospective members should attend the yearly introductory meeting on the first Monday of UCLA’s fall quarter at the Hammer Museum. This year’s meeting will take place on Monday, September 26, 2011 at 6:30pm in Cafe Hammer.
Alternatively, prospective members may download an application from below and submit via email. Prospective members must apply via one of the three committees listed below. Applications are due by September 30, 2011.
